The City of Angola awarded grant for Maumee Street streetscape improvements.

June 17, 2011. Angola, Indiana. During the City of Angola’s ribbon cutting ceremony celebrating the completion of the first phase of the downtown revitalization project it was announced that the City of Angola has been awarded $1,000,000.00 in Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Transportation Enhancement (TE) funds by the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) Fort Wayne District for Phase II of the Maumee Street (US Hwy 20) streetscape improvement project. Mayor Hickman stated that “The City of Angola is extremely pleased and grateful to be receiving this TE grant. This will allow us to finish the largest remaining portion of the downtown revitalization project. We look forward to partnering with INDOT to move forward with improving pedestrian safety, fostering economic growth and beautifying our downtown.”

Mayor Hickman also thanked and acknowledged the effort of many of the individuals, businesses and organizations that made this 35+ year dream for downtown Angola come true, “A lot of hard work by the private sector and our city employees has helped to make this project a success for our community. We appreciate our volunteers and the State of Indiana for their support of our community” said Mayor Hickman.

The City of Angola has been working with the Go Angola Downtown Alliance and the Angola Area Chamber of Commerce to implement the Angola Downtown 20/20 Plan adopted in 2008. The first phase of the downtown Angola streetscape was recently completed that included a redesign of the Public Square and the installation of planted medians along US Highway 20 (Maumee Street). To date nearly $2.2 million in grant and fundraising dollars has been secured for downtown Angola planning and improvement efforts.
