Throughout the revitalization planning process, the safety, quality and character of Downtown’s street environment was repeatedly stated as a top public issue. It was said that downtown was unsafe and this detracted from the desire to walk the streets and shop in stores. The number and volume of semi-trucks on U.S. 20 (Maumee Street), the crumbling sidewalks and curbs and the lack of shade trees, benches and other amenities were just some of the issues repeatedly identified. To address this, the City of Angola has been working to make streetscape improvements become a reality in the Downtown and ultimately create an environment that is “open for business” and allows for Downtown to compete with other areas of Angola as a viable destination for shopping, commerce and living.
